On the border between Ethiopia and Eritrea, after decades of war, today another battle is being fought: that of survival for thousands of refugees fleeing the dictatorship. There are 5 Eritrean refugee camps on the Ethiopian border, and life takes place with enormous difficulties due to the lack of water, the lack of basic necessities, but above all the lack of a future.
Three protagonists of the film: Dr. Alganesh Fessah, an Italian Eritrean, a life in the forefront for her fellow countrymen on the run; refugees arriving from the border: Ethiopia, a land that welcomes a total of one million people fleeing Eritrea, South Sudan, Somalia, Congo.
In the film we meet some children on the run alone, without parents. More and more unaccompanied minors arrive at the first reception camp of Endabaguna, they are from 4 to 16 years old, they dream of seeing their mother again and of being able to study, they dream of a life.
Among the camps, one in particular presents extremely difficult conditions: it is that of the Kunama, who have always been persecuted, who arrived at the camp already 17 years ago and now without any prospects. In the Mai Ayni camp, refugees find relief and some hope in the work of the Ghandi association, also supported by the Diocesan Missionary Center of Trento: preschool children receive a hot meal a day and health care, the elderly come to collect every month a bar of soap and a handful of coffee beans.
Doctor Alganesh, who does not want to be called a “hero”, in her daily life spends herself on the weakest of the refugees. It has launched humanitarian corridors for the most desperate cases, supports the various camps, goes to Egyptian prisons to free prisoners, and is in the front row in Sinai to free those kidnapped and tortured. Does Alganesh see hope on the horizon?
