COMPLEXion Updates

A documentary. A journey around the world with Miss America Nina Davuluri. A social campaign to create a debate on skin colour, fight the stigma, dismantle imposed beauty standards to redirect people towards self-acceptance.

NEXT STEPS May 2020

The coronavirus crisis and the restrictions imposed forced us to change the course of the project. The documentary, which initially was going to cover the whole world, focused on South Asia instead. However, the social campaign had a strong, global start. If the situation will improve, we may create other parts in the form of documentaries: a series of episodes for TV and streaming.

COMPLEXion, the documentary

The documentary, filmed in India, Bangladesh and the US presents the internal and external journey of Nina Davuluri in India. Her story, the problems connected to skin colour in her community, her Miss America victory. Throughout her journey, she will meet boys and girls who suffer because of skin-related discriminations and the pressures perpetuated by the skin lightening industry.

COMPLEXion, the platform

Nina Davuluri has launched the COMPLEXion campaign on her social media channels. The campaign showcases brief stories from all around the world, from all genders and ages, on colourism and self-acceptance. The aim is to steer a conversation on beauty standards that do not value differences, and highlight subjective discriminations.

The social media part starts with the presentation of 10 videos with an overview on different sides of the conversation. Nina has already presented 3 episodes, which created stimulating debates and interest in the USA and South Asia. From here, the campaign will undertake new paths and perspectives.
